Using Your Stolt Backpack
Active Commute FAQ
Wondering how your Stolt backpack performs on a run commute? Whether it can carry your laptop safely or keep your work clothes crisp? This FAQ covers the real-world use of our bags – from stability and weather protection to how to pack for a smooth transition between workouts and the office. Designed to help you get the most out of your gear, these answers reflect our commitment to running performance, technical functionality, and timeless design.
Active Commuting & Versatility
Stolt backpacks are specifically designed for run commuting, so they stay snug with minimal bounce even on vigorous runs. Key features that keep the pack comfortable and stable include:
High-mount ergonomic fit: The pack sits higher on your back for optimal weight distribution, helping to reduce bouncing during runs .
Secure strap system: Adjustable sternum (chest) and waist straps hold the backpack tight to your body to prevent swaying. The waist belt can be hidden behind the back panel (Alpha design) or detached completely to double as a running belt (Athlete design) for added versatility.
Breathable padding: Padded shoulder straps and a breathable mesh back panel make it “super comfy to move with,” while also allowing airflow so your back doesn’t get too sweaty.
Thanks to this design, runners find that the bag “won’t budge whilst you move” , letting you focus on your pace and not on adjusting your backpack.
Yes – Stolt backpacks are built for versatility. All our models feature a hideaway strap system, so you can tuck in the shoulder straps to carry the bag like a briefcase or holdall when you arrive at the office. Switching modes is quick and easy: simply unclip or stow away the straps and grab the top handle. This way, you can run or cycle to work in the morning, then walk into your meeting with a sleek, professional-looking briefcase in hand – no separate bag needed.
When running, a waist strap serves two important purposes: stability and extra storage. So when attached, the detachable waist strap acts as a traditional waist belt to secure the backpack tightly against you – great for reducing movement during runs or cycles. All waist straps on Stolt packs comes with built-in easy-access pockets, perfect for holding small items (like your phone, keys, or energy gels) while on the go. Unclip the detachable waist strap and it transforms into a standalone running belt that you can wear by itself on light days . For example, if you decide to do a short run without the backpack, you can use the waist strap (running belt) to carry essentials. It’s an innovative way to add versatility – ensuring you get use out of every part of the backpack, even when you’re not carrying the full pack. Please note: the Athlete design has the detachable waist strap whereas the Alpha design has the hideaway system instread.
Packing & Organization
Stolt offers a smart solution for carrying formal clothes: our travel garment box accessory. This lightweight, hard-shell garment case fits neatly inside the backpack and keeps your dress shirts, suits, or dresses crease-free, even during a run. To use it, fold your garments using the provided folding card (packing board) – it guides you in folding shirts, trousers and jackets to minimise creasing . Place the folded clothes in the garment box, zip it up, and slide it into the pack. The garment box holds your clothing securely in place, so “neither will your clothes [budge], snugly stored in [the] separate garment box to keep them wrinkle-free.” When you arrive at your destination, you can take out your clothes fresh and ready to wear, without any ironing needed.
Packing work attire in Stolt’s travel garment box ensures a wrinkle-free commute. The garment box, included in our business sets, protects your folded shirts and suits inside the backpack . By using the folding card to neatly pack your garments, you can run or cycle to work without worrying about wrinkles. Simply pack your clothes in the garment box, and they’ll stay crisp and professional upon arrival – a major advantage for run-commuters heading straight to the office.
Our backpacks are designed with compartments to isolate your workout gear from your work gear. The Alpha backpack includes an expandable shoe compartment where you can store your running shoes or dirty gym clothes separately from your laptop and apparel . In addition, we offer an anti-microbial laundry bag that comes with our backpack sets – you can stuff your sweaty running kit into this pouch to contain moisture and odour . The fabric of the laundry bag locks in smell and sweat, keeping the rest of your bag’s contents fresh. By using the shoe pocket and laundry bag, you ensure that your clean items (like your folded work clothes or laptop) stay protected from dirt and odour, even after a hard workout.
Yes. Stolt backpacks feature a padded, secure laptop compartment designed to hold devices up to 16 inches safely. This dedicated sleeve is located against the back panel of the pack, which is the most stable position (closest to your centre of gravity). The padding absorbs shocks and prevents your laptop from jostling against other items. Combined with the bag’s snug fit (thanks to the strap system), your laptop will not bounce dramatically as you run. Many active commuters use our packs to carry their work laptop daily; the device stays tight against your back, cushioned by padding on both the laptop sleeve and the ventilated back panel. In short, your laptop will be well-protected from bumps or sweat during a run commute. (Of course, always make sure to zip the compartment fully and use the internal strap if provided to secure the laptop in place.)
Weather, Care & Durability
Stolt backpacks are built to withstand typical UK weather and more. The main materials are water-resistant with a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating, so the pack will keep your belongings dry in moderate rain. For heavy downpours or all-day bike rides in the rain, you can get our 100% waterproof hi-vis rain cover that you can pull over the backpack . This high-visibility cover not only keeps your bag completely dry, but also makes you more visible to traffic in dark or rainy conditions. Between the coated fabric and the rain cover, you’ll be prepared for any weather. Moreover, Stolt’s material has an anti-microbial treatment that repels sweat and odour as well – meaning even in a humid downpour or a sweaty run, the backpack resists moisture seeping in and won’t develop bad smells. Tip: After using the rain cover, let it air-dry before stowing it back under the pack, to avoid trapping moisture.
Cleaning is straightforward: we recommend spot-cleaning the backpack by hand. Use a damp cloth with mild detergent to wipe any dirty areas, then air dry it thoroughly. Thanks to the stain-resistant, coated fabrics we use, you’ll find that dirt generally wipes off easily and the bag doesn’t require frequent washing. (Avoid machine-washing or submerging the backpack completely, as that could damage the protective coatings and padding.) For maintenance, periodically brush out any grit from the zippers to keep them running smoothly – we use tough YKK zippers, which are very durable , but it helps to keep them clean of debris. If any part of the pack (like buckles or straps) gets especially muddy, a quick rinse with water and a towel dry is fine. Overall, with normal use you’ll find the pack is low-maintenance: the sweat- and odor-resistant materials keep it fresh, and a quick wipe-down now and then is enough to keep your Stolt backpack looking and performing like new.
Stolt backpacks are engineered for daily performance and longevity. We use high-end materials like premium coated nylon or polyester (such as 500D Cordura®) that balance durability and light weight. All straps, stitching and hardware are chosen with commuters in mind: we use robust YKK zippers and Fidlock magnetic buckles, so you won’t have to worry about zipper failures or broken clips even with daily wear and heavy loads. Many of our customers run or cycle with their bag every single day; our design and materials can handle this repetitive stress. In fact, one of our product testers called it “an investment bag you could easily get a lifetime of use from.” To back up that confidence, Stolt provides a 2-year warranty on all backpacks. This means you can expect the bag to not only survive but thrive through years of active commutes, and if any workmanship issues do arise, we’ll make it right. In short, your Stolt backpack is a long-term partner for your daily adventures – built to be “the last backpack you’ll ever need.”
